Club Catalyst turned 1 years old on New Years Eve!

To celebrate, Rik & Brielle threw a weekend of fun parties which included a concert on New Years Day by the Pipe Dreams.

The 90 minute concert broke all attendance records and was an amazing finale for the weekend. The band invited Pipe Major Rik to the stage to play with them for an encore, much to the delight of the crowd.

Pipe Dreams will be playing the 4th Friday of every month at Catalyst beginning January 27, 2012.

Rik and Brielle look forward to another year offering fine Celtic entertainment and making new friendships on the Inverness City sim.

Jim Reeves & Patsy Cline Tribute Show Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011

Rik Xaris and Brielle Coronet brought the songs of Jim Reeves & Patsy Cline to life in a great tribute show featuring the country duo's hit tunes, such as "Crazy," "I Love You Because," Have You Ever Been Lonely," I fall to Pieces" and many more.

Fans enjoyed the show and danced the night away at the Inn as they sang along to their favorite tunes. Catch a repeat performance after the new year!

Elvis Visits Loch Ness!

On Sunday, December 4, 2011 Elvis visited Loch Ness Inn with the help of Rik Xaris.

Elvis entertained the packed inn with all his hit songs for over two hours. Many swooned in the audience and one lucky lady even received his scarf!

Elvis was invited back to the Inn in the near future. Be sure to look for notices when he will visit the Highlands again. Elvis is eternally grateful to Rik for helping him appear in Second Life.

Rik Xaris, Piper Major Performs Solo Show

On Sunday, November 13th Rik Xaris, Pipe Major, performed a solo piping show to a standing room only crowd at the Loch Ness Inn.

Rik is a real life Scottish piper who has had a life long appreciation of the bagpipes. He enjoys sharing his music with an SL audience.

Rik will be entertaining at the Inn again in the near future in case you missed his show. Look for announcements and hope to see you there!

DRONES & DRUMS SHOW

On Sunday, November 6th the Loch Ness Inn welcomed Drones & Drums.

Rik Xaris a real life piper, played the bagpipes and Brielle Coronet accompanied on drums. They shared contemporary pipe and drum tunes with the crowd at the packed out Inn.

Everyone danced and had a great time. Drones & Drums look forward to playing at Loch Ness Inn again in the near future.

Loch Ness in new Lonely Planet guide-book

The Lonely Planet is a travellers' guide with a style far removed from the conventional; its latest publication of the world's 1000 ultimate sights includes such categories as 'most bizarre' (the Duke of Wellington's Statue in Glasgow - yes, the one pemanently wearing a traffic cone) and 'most spooky' ( the Scott Monument in Edinburgh).
Other contributions from Scotland include Eilean Donan Castle (most fairy tale like), along with Skara Brae (most intriguing lost city), and Up-Helly-Aa (most entertaining parade).
But it is in the 'most mysterious' list that Loch Ness features, due no doubt to the continuing interest in the existence or otherwise of the fabled Loch Ness Monster, known to us devotees as Nessie.

In a discussion which followed, I guessed that Black Rod was the Marquess of Cholmondeley, but he is in fact the Lord Great Chamberlain. The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod is Lieutenant-General Arundell David Leakey CMG CBE (sorry, Dave!)

Thank you all for coming to celebrate Scottish Artists -- in particular, David Roberts -his lithographs from the 1840's not only recorded how the monuments looked at the time -- he set the standard for art of Egypt and the Holy Land.... his work is still used by Egyptologists today and is treasured and collected all over the world. The artwork in these photos represent the famed temple of Dendera dedicated to Hathor, Ramses II at Abu Simbel, The Sphinx (this is a top ten lithograph), Ramses II in Aswan.

Second Life's 8th Birthday Celebrations (SL8B)

We were lucky to be given a spot at SL8B and our exhibit is now open for visitors. It comprises a slightly remodelled Loch Ness Inn (or Aldourie Castle) filled with pictures of our four sims in The Highlands of Scotland.

Summer Solstice Celebration in the Highlands of Scotland, Tuesday, June 14 at 2:30 sl time. Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year with the shortest night. Many cultures around the world celebrate summer solstice.

In ancient civilizations, the sun as the omnipotent source of power was celebrated. Druids and Celts also celebrated summer solstice as the wedding of heaven and earth. The June Moon - was called the "Honey Moon" for the meade made from fermented honey that was part of the wedding ceremonies and celebrations! Many would light sacred fires, dance and stay up all night to welcome the dawn and the anticipated bright warm days of summer.

Hi Albannach fans,

In case you haven't heard, Jamesie Johnston of Albannach was stabbed by a fan at the Highland games in Glasgow, Kentucky last weekend. Jamesie was stabbed in the liver and thigh but will recover from his injuries.

Many fans want to help in some way and does Virtual Albannach. While Jamesie's insurance will cover much of his medical expenses, Jamesie and the band will still have additional expenses to cover. The RL Albannach has suggested that any funds donated by fans be made to their "fuel fund," which is a catch-all account supporting the band's needs.

So, in response to this sad turn of events, Virtual Albannach will be playing a fund raiser on the Highlands sim this Sunday, June 12 at 2pmSL.

Virtual Red Hot Chilli Pipers Fire Up Highlands!

The Virtual Red Hot Chilli Pipers lit up the stage at the Highlands sim last Saturday May 28, 2011!

The crowd was entertained with songs by Ulrika and Thom, who also plays a mean guitar. Front and center were the dynamic piping duo, Mac and Kerrie. In the percussion section with foot stomping drumming were Paat, Lexy and Solari. Rounding out the rhythm was Lacy on sax and Jamesie on the keyboard.

Lead singer, Ulrika belts out songs with both the Virtual Red Hot Chillis and Albannach bands.

When asked to give her fans an inside peek into her SL life, she replied, "Came to SL january 2007...thought I would be a Land baron...oh yey ...bought a load of land ...sold a load of land ...lost money ..lol..met up with Lexy Mayo with whom I still play this magic game ...We live in the Azure Islands on a tropical beach ...sighs lovely ...and now what have we done...been a Knights Templar ..fought dragons .. I am healer for the battles ...not to many successes ..been killed more than healed...Sailed Takos and beach cats with Thom Gravois and have my own yacht to have adventures, also have a tent and rucsack to keep me warm fed and dry on said adventures ..."

You'd think that would keep Uli busy enough but believe it or not she even designs hair and made the Chillis and albannach hat and hair she wears to perform in, which is sold at the Chilli's band store.

Look for the Virtual RHCP to play regularly at the Highland sim and remember to bring your friends along to hear their incredible music. You are guaranteed a great time and will definitely get you up on your feet to dance!

This Thursday's Quiz topic is RAILWAYS OF THE UK, as chosen last week by the runner-up. If you think it sounds like a challenge, try setting the questions! Thanks to Ael, I have learned a lot this week.

As the topic is somewhat specialised, I have tried to set some questions so they might also be answered with some general knowledge, e.g. "Birmingham International Railway Station was opened in which year, the same year Concorde first flew scheduled flights?"

The Quiz will start at 2:00pm (SLT) or 10:00pm (BST) in the Loch Ness Inn.

This is a wonderful opportunity, to show the rest of the World, what we Highlanders already know, whether it be Second Life or Real Life, we are privileged to belong to one of the most special places on the planet.

We must move quickly on this, really within a couple of days, and I already know from LauraClaire, some of you are very keen to help.

If you can help out, please email me (with your SL name if you're using a RL email) by 11pm (SLT) on 1st June 2011, and make yourself available for a meeting on 2nd June at 3:45pm (SLT). I think it might be good to have this meeting in voice, but will accommodate for those who don't have it.

The wild, tribal drumming and piping of Virtual Albannach rocked Inverness on Sunday May 21, 2011!

Albannach is drums, drums, drums and screaming pipes and if you missed yesterday's performance, you'll be able to catch them again at Inverness in the near future.

Meet the band members who performed Sunday:

Lacy217 McLuhan - when not banging the drums with Albannach, Lacy also owns the Tartan Shops, Nessie's Pub and has numerous vendor booths at Inverness. She also plays with SL's Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

Rik Xaris - Albannach's piper who is also a real life piper! When not blowing out amazing tunes, he also performs with SL's Red Hot Chilli Pipers band. In addition, Rik is part time DJ and co-owner of Catalyst, a Scottish themed lounge offering a variety of music venues.

Brielle Coronet - she belted out Albannach's vocals at yesterday's performance and pounded the drum. She also is a dancer with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, part time DJ and co-owner of Catalyst.

Chimera Hermit - Chim pipes as well as bangs the Bodhran with Albannach. He's also a piper with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers band. When Chim isn't playing with the bands he can be seen collecting landmarks of churches and cathedrals around Second Life.

Lexy Mayo - Lexy drums, dances and sings with Albannach and also performs with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. In his past SL time Lexy has fought Medieval battles as a Knight Templar and was a Napoleonic era British Officer but now his SL time is spent hanging out with Ulrika, another Albannach and Red Hot Chilli Pipers member.

We had a great crowd who danced to the pulsating music so if you missed yesterday's performance, don't fret, we'll soon be firing up the stage again at Inverness City!

Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862. This day marks the victory of a small, poorly armed force of around 4,500 soldiers over the French invasion of a well-armed, professional army led by Napoleon III that had about 8,000 soldiers. This battle known as the legendary Battle of Puebla lasted for 4 hours and ended in the victory of the small Mexican army. So Cinco de Mayo is hugely celebrated with pomp, gaiety and fiestas in the traditional Mexican style.

It is celebrated on May 5th every year -- in SL we are celebrating it on May 3rd at 2:30 SL time ! Join us in celebrating this victory of freedom and liberty -- unity and pride -- a festival that spans the ages and cultures.

The regular Thursday Night Quiz at the Loch Ness Inn will begin half an hour earlier than usual at 1:30pm (SLT) or 9:30pm (BST) on 28th April and this will be the new, regular time.

This week's topic is MUSIC: Ancient and Modern, everything from Rachmaninoff to Runrig.

Always good to get the first night out of the way!

I was delighted when Lauraclaire asked me to be the new Quiz Master for the regular Thursday Quiz; which I've much enjoyed attending for a very long time. Tonight I found out, it's more difficult than Laura ever made it look.

Thankfully, I got through my first night and it was fun.

Tonight's results were:

3rd - Arcanis and Eye (with apologies to Eye, I missed announcing he was 3rd) - 3 points each

Although I won't be making major changes to how Laura has run the Quiz (since 1984?) there is one wee change I will be starting from next Thursday: a L$ 50 special prize for the evening's best Magnus Malapropism. The weekly prize will go to the funniest answer of the evening, which bears some resemblance to the correct answer/question and makes me laugh.

Scottish Orchestras and Composers, 15 March

DJ Ael's Tuesday night event in the Inverness Ballroom will again take place at 10.30 GMT, 11.30 Western European Time which I think is 3pm SLT this week and next (why can't the Americans change their clocks at the same time as everyone else, it is just sooo confusing!!!)

This week he will be focusing on two Scottish Orchestras, the Royal Scottish and the BBS Scottish. A mix of music by Scottish, English and other European and American composers will be played.

Rumours are circulating that I am leaving. In one sense that is true, I am standing down from the CEO function. However, I am not going to suddenly vanish from the scene completely.

I built the current Virtual Highlands in Second Life and have been managing it for a number of years. The business model adopted was that B&Bs etc. would finance the sims and visitors would click on their links. This does not appear to be working for the smaller businesses, although the number of clicks for the Loch Ness Centre is at a reasonable level and Jacobite Cruises is at a high level. When did you last visit our sponsors' websites? Well shame on you!

However, small organisations can suffer from short-termism and we have lost a couple of sponsors meaning that our profitability has suffered by a small amount. As long as the major sponsors stay on board that should not represent a serious problem as shortfall can be made up from reserves (L$156,000) or by calling on shareholders to find the shortfall (in February, if shareholders had had to make up the shortfall it would have cost them L$4 [yes 4 lindens] per share so the amounts are miniscule).

My reason for standing down as the Chief Executive in May is because I feel a new approach is needed and new blood to look for sponsorship solutions into the future.

The plan is for remaining shareholders and staff to consider how best to move forward and who they want to replace me.

My future involvement will be to continue to run the Hunt and Maze and build the new sims as they are added (if I am wanted to do that). The plan is still to go both east and west, but it has to be tempered with caution until new sponsors are found. It is about time I could do the things I enjoy, like building the Inn and sculpting the scenery rather than totting up columns of figures and endlessly trying to contact sponsors.

What I do not want is to have to manage the finances and be the person responsible for finding new sponsors and that is what I am standing down from. I am planning for RL retirement and need to concentrate on that for a couple of years.

Lauraclaire, my deputy, and other shareholders need to sort out the new management structure between now and the end of May. They are fully aware of the needs and I am sure it is at the top of their priorities.

So, Gerald Wylie is not going anywhere, he is just cutting down the amount of day to day admin he has to do.

What you can do to help is to let me or Lauraclaire know of any talents YOU have that could be used to help the Virtual Scottish Highlands through the next couple of years.

Staff Update for 2011

Our events have been going really well over the past few weeks of the New Year. Traffic was higher over the Christmas Holidays, which is to be expected.

We now have a good team who work together and help promote our Sims with enthusiasm.

Kami is our newest recruit to both our team and to SL itself. Kami is from Austria and is a DJ / Host for events. Kami also is our new Breakfast Hostess with one of the best tables I have seen. You all need to try to make our Highland Breakfast.

Ael has been with the Highlands since the beginning but only recently got heavily involved with the events. Ael is British and lives in the London Area. Ael provides the perfect music for our Caledonian Ballroom and will also be using his skills with our Dance Troup (Funky Feet).

Snaggy provides our Rock (Classic, Metal and various other genres) Music and entertains us with her quirky local text and intros. Snaggy is from Germany but her master of the English Language (with a wee bit of Scots) is wonderful.

Remius is our longest serving DJ and Host in our team. Remi has been with us since our old sim in Spectre and provides the Celtic Sounds and is the team leader of the DJs since Monti stepped back. Remius is also from Germany and has mastered our Scottish 'Accents' in Local Chat rather well.

Our Farm Manager, Peter, has put forward a few good ideas for the way forward and has also scattered his sheep in and around all our sims. I do hope everyone enjoys the country sounds.

Our Greeters are now being encouraged to be more active and hopefully encourage more visitors who enjoy what they see, perhaps rent a croft or just become a regular in our Events.

We will keep you up to date with future plans and please feel free to use our suggestion box for any events you wish to see.

Remember our Ballroom, Inn and Letterfinlay Lodge can be used for your own private parties too - at a small charge.

Weekly Ballroom Dance

Just a reminder that DJ Aelthing will once again be playing music for the weekly ballroom dance at the Caledonian Ballroom. Back to Tuesday evening at 2.30slt (the DJ wants to check out the new legal drama on BBC1 and see if it is anything like his experiences of the professions) following last weeks removal to Monday to coincide with Valentine's Day. Music, as usual, will be wide ranging classical with a leaning towards that written for the dance.

The Hidden Mystical Highlands #5: Hunt for Loch Ness Monster Heats Up

It's nearly the end of February and scores of Nessie Hunters are vying to be the Leader and the winner of the monthly prize of $L1,000. The competitors will have to use a variety of tools and special equipment to try to detect their quarry, including surface cameras, underwater cameras, different kinds of sonar, biological research vessels, even a cage! They will have to interview many eye-witnesses, and their hunt will take them all around the Scottish Highlands. They are sure to be challenged, and maybe even a bit muddy by the end of it, but the chase is worth it all to these intrepid monster-hunters.

I made a go at catching Nessie in January this year. During the hunt, my crew left their posts to watch something they thought was a UFO while I was away seeking sponsorship, and we lost 100 points! Another time an expensive sonar went overboard (I was driving the boat at the time, but I blamed rough water heh heh) and it cost us N$804. At the end of the hunt we came in with 2,773 Nessie Points, to finish in 11th place.

Congratulations to Athena Chatterbox, who won January's hunt with 3,257 points.
